Dateline: 25th January 2010
From Nigel Spencer, forwarded by Alan Mitchell,
Cornwall RFU Hon. Secretary.
Cornwalls under17s playing their 1st game of the season travelled to Kingswood School to play Bath Youth u18s and came away with an a hard fought win in a physical encounter. Cornwalls pack well led by captain Callum Thompson with Jason Iam and Graham Glew to the fore dominated the early stages and good positive rucking led to quick ball to backs superbly led by scrum half Cam Meakin and to scores for Thompson and Jones to establish a 12 - 0 lead before Bath hit back with a tap penalty resulting in a home try. Further good driving play brought about a try for debutant Anthony Dickinson who enjoyed a good all round display to bring about a 17 - 5 lead at the break.
The home side tore into the visitors but good defending kept them out and then on a counter attack Coles coolly slotted a penalty to increase the lead further and then Sam Jones forceful run set up an attacking ruck and then Graham Glew crashed over for a 27 - 12 lead before Bath once again scored from close in to narrow the lead to 27 - 19. Undaunted the visitors stormed back and following good approach play lewis seaton outpaced the home defence to conclude a great victory.
The under 17s now play Plymouth College at Penryn this Sunday at 1pm before Somerset at Newquay 21/2 at 1.30pm.
