BILL BEAUMONT CUP

DEVON V CORNWALL

Cornwall go into their third and final pool match this Saturday against old rivals Devon at Brixham RFC kick-off 2:30 pm, knowing a win will be good enough to take them back to Twickenham  for the sixth time in seven years.

Having already defeated Devon in this season’s Tamar Cup match at Brickfields last month 28-13, Cornwall will be keen to avenge the Championship defeat to Devon last season at Camborne 20-19, however there will be a key player from the Tamar cup win missing, full-back Matt Shepherd.

Shepherd picked up an injury against Hertfordshire last Saturday, sadly has not recovered in time.

After long consideration the selectors opted for Redruth’s Richie Kevern going  into the starting XV at full-back, whilst fellow red Dean Bonds, a try scorer last week, gets the nod over Kyle Speare on the wing who reverts to the bench.

Albion’s experienced wing/centre Seti Raumakita comes in on the bench as does Camborne’s scrum-half Taron Peacock, the unfortunate player to miss out is another Cherry and White, utility back Rhys Brownfield.

Head coach Graham Dawe said ahead of the game. “It’s going to be a huge battle against Devon, we have to earn the right to make the final again, the game will come down to those fine margins and who is prepared to put their bodies on the line.”

Cornish players feature for the Rose

With the Guinness 6 Nations drawing to a close, it is worth recalling the Cornish players who have been involved in this season's championship.

Jack Nowell and Luke Cowan-Dickie have been regulars in Eddie Jones' squads and both feature again today in the Calcutta Cup match against Scotland at Twickenham to bring down the curtain on this season's tournament.

In the Under 20s Alfie Petch (Bude) has been involved. Another fine prospect at prop who is with Exeter Chiefs.

Outside of the 6 Nations we have had three Cornish Women (pictured) involved with England Women Under 20s,  Charlie Budge, Merryn Doidge and Ebony Jefferies, all play at Bristol Bears. Congratulations to all three as they face France Women Under 20s at Newbury.

Well done to one and all for flying the Cornish colours at International level.

Thanks to Will Doidge for the picture taken at Newbury RFC on Saturday.

County squad team building evening

Cornwall Senior XV Championship season

CRFU selectors, coaches Graham Dawe and Marek Churcher as well as team manager Chris Fuca have met and have a squad of players to attend the team building event hosted by Marc Bishop at sponsors St Austell Tribute Brewery on Friday 22nd February commencing at 7 pm.

Chris Fuca and Julian Wilce will be contacting players and their club coaches inviting them to the event scheduled for Friday 22nd February so that everyone knows the season plan, dates and details. This starts the process of getting the team ready for the Tamar Cup in April to be played in Plymouth at Brickfields and then the Bill Beaumont County Championship games scheduled for May when Cornwall are away to Kent on 4th May at Medway, home at Redruth against Herts on 11th May and then away to Devon at Brixham on the 18th of May.

Chair of selectors, Terry Carter, is pleased with the work of the selectors who have visited all our clubs and identified players who have the calibre to play for the County. He added,‘now it’s down to the players to deliver the results we expect, play with commitment and passion for the black and gold and make Cornwall supporters proud of their team’.

Cornwall Team to Face Hertfordshire Plus LIVE Video Link Here

With injuries and the unavailability of players the selectors have been forced to make several changes to the squad to travel to Bishop’s Stortford for the third round of the Bill Beaumont County Championship (Division One South) on Saturday 19th May.

The boys will be playing for pride as the hopes of a sixth consecutive Twickenham appearance were thwarted by the single point defeat by Devon last week and Tier One participation for the next two years is already guaranteed.

The pressure will be on Hertfordshire who still have the chance of getting to Twickenham but who will have to overcome twenty-two players in black & gold who will be keen to show that they should not be taken lightly.

Kick Off is at 3.00 p.m. and the whole game can be watched live here (thanks to Dave Burrows):

Don’t forget Radio Cornwall will also be giving full match commentary with John Martin and Dave Jenkins.
