‘Stack’ Stevens - Service of Thanksgiving

It has been confirmed that a ‘Service of Thanksgiving’ for Brian ‘Stack’ Stevens is to be held at:

St. Mary’s Church, Penzance

Friday 27th October

commencing 12 noon

Those attending the Service of Thanksgiving are afterwards invited to the Pirates ‘Westholme’ clubhouse.

Following a long illness Stack sadly passed away on Tuesday 10th October 2017.

A true legend in Cornish rugby Stack skippered Cornwall from 1973 to 1975 and played 83 times for the county. He was capped 25 times for England (captain in 1971) and was a 1971 British and Irish Lion when they toured New Zealand in 1971.

Our thoughts are with Stack’s nearest and dearest at this sad time.

Cornish Clubs Fixtures for Saturday 21st/Sunday 22nd October 2017

The Pirates will be looking to build on their opening success last week in Round Two of the British & Irish Cup.

In National Two South Redruth will hope to continue their run of home wins when they entertain familiar rivals Clifton. In the South West Premier Camborne are at home to Newbury Blues with whom they are level on points. Launceston should be favourites at home to Teignmouth in South West One West whilst London Cornish will be hoping to continue their winning streak at home to league leaders Medway in London One South.

In Tribute Western Counties West St Austell and St Ives both have home fixtures as they try to keep the pressure on the league pace-setters, Devonport Services.

The Tribute Cornwall & Devon league sees leaders Penryn host third placed Honiton and second placed Saltash at home to fourth placed Wellington. In the Tribute Cornwall League Liskeard-Looe travel to Camborne School of Mines as they try to maintain their lead at the top whilst fourth placed Bodmin host third placed Newquay Hornets in the pick of the round in that league.

Check the local press and club websites for kick-off times and with twenty games in the county this weekend (Truro and Bude are the only Cornish based clubs crossing the Tamar this weekend) there are plenty to choose from so get out there and support your club.

Navy Trio Answer the Call for ‘One and All’

The Cornwall Rugby Football Union is delighted to announce a new coaching team for Cornwall Ladies for the 2017/18 season. Pictured are Head Coach Martyn Ruskin (centre) with Assistant Coach Chat Harris and Team Manager Lorry Osman.

Under their guidance the hope is for Cornwall Ladies to participate in the 2018 Gill Burns County Championship.

Both Martyn and Chat have an impressive background in women’s rugby within Cornwall coaching and delivering strength and conditioning at Torpoint and more recently at Plymouth Albion. They have also been appointed head and assistant coaches for the Royal Navy Ladies team which will work hand in hand perfectly with their county roles.

Martyn said, “I am looking forward to the new challenges coaching the CRFU ladies squad and developing the ladies to effectively compete in the county competition towards the end of the season and move CRFU women’s rugby in the right direction."

Last but not least, Lorry Osman has taken the role of team manager. Already heavily involved with girls’ rugby within Cornwall she also has a wealth of experience within the women’s game both as a player and as Assistant Team Manager for the Royal Navy ladies’ team.

Another exciting development is that 17-year-old girls can play in the women’s game and the trio plan to aid this transition.

Launceston RFC will be the home of Cornwall ladies this season with training and the two home fixtures being played there. The CRFU would like to thank Liz Holden and the committee at Launceston RFC for hosting the ladies.

First on the agenda is a Ladies Development Day Saturday 18th November from 10.00 am. to 2.00 p.m. when all ladies who play in Cornwall or have dual registration due to university will be welcome.
