Club Accreditation award to Falmouth RFC PDF Print Email

Falmouth RFC's great year off the field reached a climax at the end of October with confirmation that they have become the first club in Cornwall to win 'Club Accreditation' under the new RFU scheme. This recognition of the club's progress comes on the heels of a Rugby Football Foundation grant for improvements to training lights; the SW Division, RFU President's Award for Community Involvement; a Rugby Football Foundation grant to buy new clubhouse furniture; the attraction of new sponsors of the junior section, RAF Careers Service; and record numbers of boys and girls competing in the mini age groups.

Falmouth RFC Chairman Kim Conchie said, "We are all thrilled. A lot of people at the club have worked really hard to achieve Accreditation. Three and a half years ago when I was appointed chairman, I set getting Seal of Approval (as it then was) as a key target so this is very satisfying. This, of course, is the start of a new era. There is a lot of work still to be done on facilities, meeting on-field targets and ensuring we are reaching out to schools  in the area which are not playing rugby at the moment in order to introduce young people to rugby and to attract them to the club. Accreditation will give us the confidence and enthusiasm that we can push on from here."

Cornwall's Rugby Development Officer, Mike Bratt, added, "I'm delighted for Falmouth. They have worked really hard for this and I have watched their progress with interest."

PRESS RELEASE

“NEXT STEP FOR CORNWALL UNDER 20’s IN THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP”

Cornwall Rugby Football Union (CRFU) Under 20’s will take their next step in the 2014 County Championship on Sunday 23nd February.

The Under 20’s trained last weekend following their victory over Dorset & Wilts in the opening round of the competition. They now take on Devon at Penryn RFC on Sunday 23rd February with a 14:30 kick off.

CRFU President Ken Plummer said “This will be a tough test for these youngsters who fought bravely to record a win in their first game.” He went on to say I am sure Captain Todd Prisk and his team will be striving for a win to take us into the quarter-finals.

This is second pool match that Cornwall play, having won their first game 35 – 37 with the final kick of the game from scrum half Connor Swan to add to his two conversions and a further penalty. Cornwall’s other scorers were tries from Tyler Gendall, Jamie Briant, Harry Baker and two tries from winger Luke Tidball.

Coach Ian Morgan said – “Huge credit has to go to the lads, they have really committed to what we are trying do, it’s such a young side, which showed last week by the issue of 16 ties to the squad, that’s an incredible amount of inexperience, but it didn’t show. They stuck to the task, right up to the last kick and full credit to Connor for calmly slotting it. It was a great start to the campaign, but we have a very tough task ahead, Devon will always be up for it, so hopefully we take this confidence forward and get the win. The lads deserve to progress, they have worked really hard and shown some real pride in the badge.”

A victory for Cornwall will see them earn a home quarter-final; a defeat will see the pool decided by the final game, Devon versus Dorset & Wilts.

Cornwall team Manager Chris Lea said; - “We have a very young squad and at the last game 16 players were awarded ties for their first appearance at this age group. These guys know they face a difficult task, but they have a home game and will be putting everything into it.”

CRFU Chair Denis Preece said “The lads and coaches did a fantastic job 3 weeks ago and now need to concentrate on the task in hand. It would be great to get a good number of supporters attending on Sunday, along with them being very vocal and encouraging the team!!”

Entry is via programme at a cost of £2, which will be sold on the gate on match day. The CRFU also thank our hosts Penryn RFC and the match officials who have travelled from the Dorset & Wilts society.

There will be marketing and sponsorship opportunities with the Under 20’s team and matches, any individuals or companies that may be interested are asked to contact Colin Hatch in the first instance.
