Far from the conference rooms and hospitality suites at Twickenham, RFU Chairman Andy Cosslett touched base with members of Perranporth Rugby Football Club on Wednesday 27 February 2019 as part of the RFU initiative in visiting RFU Constituent Bodies which included the Cornwall RFU. The Perranporth Club felt honoured as it was the only Club they were visiting while in Cornwall.
Joined by RFU interim CEO and ex-England scrum-half Nigel Melville, Cosslett met with club representatives of both youth and senior rugby, discussing opinions and ideas of the game over freshly-brewed tea and a pack of digestives.
The discussion of youth rugby in Cornwall took centre-stage through the course of the evening, with junior players Ben Jones, Jackson McBlain and Matthew Pollard being afforded the opportunity to have their say on the matter.
The three young club ambassadors form a small part of the club’s ‘Rugby Leader’ initiative, which sees members of older junior age groups drafted in weekly to assist the running of Friday night training sessions at the club.
They were joined by Club Chairman Steve Arthur, Club Secretary John Sumnall, Ian Jones and Alfie Martin, who further discussed Cornish youth rugby development alongside women’s rugby and community interaction.
