Cornwall Under 20 – Training Squads 2019 / 2020

I am writing as the CRFU Under 20 Team Manager to ask for your assistance with the coming season. We would like you to nominate players that you feel have the skill / knowledge and potential to represent your club at County Under 20 level.

The squad will be coached by Rich Kevern and Tyler Gendall who act as a link for these young players into the full County squad. We will be holding a training selection session early in the new season with the aim of concentrating training before the start of their Championships in February 2019.

We are looking for players to be nominated who have the potential to perform at this higher level of rugby. Last season we reached the quarter final of the Jason Leonard Cup.

The requirements are, players nominated must be under 20 years of age on 1st September 2019 and at least 17 years of age by the day of the match.

If you wish to discuss any potential players then please do not hesitate to contact myself in the first instance on the details above or in the county handbook. I thank you in anticipation of your support.

Please complete and return the pro forma by no later than 05 September 2019 to me by email or over the phone.

CORNWALL RFU UNDER 20 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020

Cornwall Rugby Football Union (CRFU) Under 20 County Championship campaign 2019 is well underway with preparations being made for the coming season.

The fixtures have not yet been released, but a list of eligible players is being complied. All clubs within the county will be asked to nominate players they think suitable for representing their club and the county at this age level prior to a team building team event in November.

We plan to play two warm up games against RNAS Culdrose and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service in preparation for the first championship game.

On the coaching side there has been a change with forwards coach Josh Lord deciding to step down due to work and family commitments. The CRFU wish to place on record their thanks to Josh for his hard work over the last couple of seasons with Cornwall Under 20 reaching the final of the Jason Leonard Cup in 2018 being the highlight.

Richie Kevern will continue as the backs coach fresh from his success with the senior team in the Bill Beaumont Cup at Twickenham, and continues to play for Redruth at National Two level.

Joining Richie is a former Cornwall U20 player Tyler Gendall. Tyler, who was Trelawny’s Army Cornwall Under 20 player of the year in 2014,  went on to play for the Cornish Pirates in the Championship before joining Bristol and then Harlequins in the Premiership before returning to the Mennaye and Championship rugby. Tyler has now retired from professional rugby and has joined St. Ives as forwards coach.

Chair of CRFU Representative Rugby Chris Lea said. “I am delighted to keep the services of Richie with all his experience for Cornwall, and Redruth in the National leagues, and am delighted to welcome Tyler in to the coaching team bringing with him a wealth of experience at the highest level of English rugby.”

Any enquires concerning the CRFU U20 should be addressed to the team manager Colin Hatch;-

Outgoing County President Peter James welcomed everyone to a well attended AGM held at County Hall.

Peter spoke warmly of his time in office and wished his successor John Sumnall well for his 3 year term.

Peter spoke of his delight and pride in the success of the Cornwall side at Twickenham and once again congratulated the players and all the staff involved with the side.

Peter also paid tribute to CRFU committee, especially those not seeking re-election, notably Chairman Denis Preece and Hon.Treasurer Richard Simeons.

Dave Saunter succeeds Denis as Chairman, whilst Andy Richards becomes Hon. Treasurer.

After the formal business, Richard Simeons was made a Life Member of the Union, whilst former Hon.Secretary Roger Watson and Nigel Dennis (Lankelly-Fowey) were made Life Vice-Presidents.

A suitable presentation will be made to Denis Preece at a later date.

Cornish girls selected for Centre of Excellence Program

Centre of Excellence Trials for Cornwall's Girls

Following nomination by their coaches, 16 representatives of last season's Cornwall Girls U18s and U15s squads have been invited for trials for the RFU Centre of Excellence programme for 2019/20.

The Centre of Excellence programme is the next step on from County competition on the Player Pathway in girls rugby, delivered at Bristol Bears and the other Tyrrells Premier 15s clubs.

Focusing on individual player skills, acceptance to the numerous advanced sessions delivered by the Centre of Excellence across the season can provide both a massive boost to the playing abilities of the accepted individuals, and to the strength of their clubs and Cornwall too!

The girls attending the trials at Bristol Bears Women's Shaftesbury Park on July 7th are Mia Abbott-Smith, Lizzie Langton, Nadine Vincent, Beth Marks, Megan Moriarty, Mia Wray, Louise Daniel, Chloe Shrosbee, Olivia Rowland (all Cornwall U18s); Evie Curnow, Paige Clarke, Lily Jehu, Sophie Daniel, Abby Smith, Hannah Davies, Betty Matthews (all Cornwall U15s).

Best of luck girls!

Ross Tucknott
