Cornwall Under 20 – Training Squads 2017 / 2018

The Cornwall Rugby Football Union Under 20 Team Manager is inviting clubs to nominate players that have the skill / knowledge and potential to represent Cornwall at Under 20 level.

The squad will be coached by Josh Lord, and Matt Shepherd who acts as a link for these young players into the full County squad. We will be holding a training selection session early in the new season with the aim of concentrating training before the start of their Championships in February 2018.

We are looking for players to be nominated who have the potential to perform at this higher level of rugby. Last season two of our players were selected for the England Counties tour plus nine players represented the South West.

The requirements are any player nominated must be under 20 years of age by 1st September 2017 and at least 17 years of age by the day of the match.

If you wish to discuss any potential players then please do not hesitate to contact Chris Lea.

Bill Beaumont Senior Men’s County Championship Fixtures 2017/18

The format of the 2017/18 competition remains the same as it was in 2016/17 with the six southern counties of Division One (Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Kent, Hertfordshire, Surrey and Devon) being divided into two groups of three with each county playing the three counties in the other group. The effect of this is that the fixtures will be the reverse of last season. The fixtures are:

Saturday 5th May 2018 – Cornwall v Surrey

Saturday 12th May 2018 – Cornwall v Devon

Saturday 19th May 2018 – Hertfordshire v Cornwall

It is understood that the bottom placed county of the six in Division One, based on their aggregate points over the two seasons (2016/17 & 2017/18), will be relegated to Division Two.

The winner of Division One will play the winner of the Northern Division One (Lancashire, Yorkshire, East Midlands, Cheshire, Eastern Counties and Northumberland) in the Final at Twickenham on Sunday 27th May 2018.

Congratulations to Matt and Robin

Well done to Matt Shepherd (pictured courtesy of Simon Bryant, Iktisphoto) and Robin Wedlake who have been selected for the England Counties tour which departs the day after the Bill Beaumont County Championship Final (Lancashire v Cornwall) on Sunday 28th May.

England Counties will complete a two-match tour of Spain from 29 May to 4 June, and team manager Matt Long is expecting a tough test.

Counties are set to face a Basque Country team in San Sebastian on Wednesday, 31 May before travelling to Guadalajara three days later to take on Spain, and Long is wary of the challenge ahead.

“I’m expecting a very physical game,” he said of the international clash. “Given we wanted a full Test against the international side, I think we’ll get one.

“We’ve done a bit of research, and we know Spain are improving, their world ranking is proof of that. We’re going to have a hard test.”

Counties will fly to Spain the day after the county championship final at Twickenham Stadium, and Long explains there will be no meet and greet beforehand, rather his side will have to gel and search for consistency from the outset.

He added: “We expect that both the Basque Country team and Spain will want to play a quick game, and we must adapt to that accordingly.”
