Following the annual “Tamar Cup” game which saw Cornwall beat Devon 17 - 33 at Tiverton RFC, coaches and selectors met to pick a squad for the first game of this season’s competition. Cornwall selected almost 50 players to be part of the enlarged squad early in January, some players have left the squad due to injury whilst others have come into the squad due to their form at club level.

CRFU President Peter James said “The months of hard work and preparation are now coming to a head with this our first game of the season in the competition at Richmond RFC on Saturday 6 May. On behalf of the CRFU I would like to thank our sponsors St Austell Brewery, Kelsall Steele & Whirlwind Sports. Those thanks also go to Graham and all volunteers who have assisted with the preparation of the team and match day organisation”

Cornwall face 3 games in the opening group stages during May.

Cornwall coach Graham Dawe said – “The 2017 season is upon us and this first match has allowed us to consider players who were not available for the Tamar Cup squad. From our initial squad we have selected our 22; other players will be available and in contention for the next game. No one’s place is guaranteed, and competition for squad places is still very much available to all members of the enlarged squad”

Cornwall next face Devon at Ivybridge RFC on Saturday 13 May. The following week they host Hertfordshire at Camborne RFC on Saturday 20 May.

Cornwall Captain Jake Murphy said; - “Asked to captain Cornwall this season is a fantastic honour and I am really proud to be given the role.  The enlarged squad has been together since February and we have become a tight knit bunch of guys from many different clubs. We hope our fantastic support led by Trelawny’s army and expats from around the country will come out in force at Richmond to lift the guys for this important first game”

Chair Denis Preece said: - “The first game is important to get the campaign off on a positive footing; Surrey v Cornwall games are always keenly fought affairs. I would like to say thank you to Graham, Marek, Rhodri, the selectors and our strength & conditioning coach Tristan Lark, for their efforts during the build up to this season’s campaign.”

The Tamar Cup match starts the build up towards the County Championship for both counties. Cornwall Rugby Football Union (CRFU) started its preparation for the 2017 Bill Beaumont County Championship several months ago.

Selectors and coaches have been observing games and watching eligible players at all levels since the start of the season. The squad have held training sessions and following this game it will be refined as the training intensifies.

CRFU President Peter James said “Graham his coaching team and the selectors have been busy since the start of the season in the selection and preparation of the squad. This year proves more difficult in the selection of players as the National league season still has a few more weeks to go. This game is important to both Counties as they start their push towards the County Championship campaign. I would like to thank all our sponsors and for their hard work and support of Cornwall Rugby”

Cornwall faces 3 fixtures during May against Surrey at Richmond RFC on the 6 May, Devon again on the 13 May at Ivybridge RFC before the final game against Hertfordshire at Camborne RFC on the 20 May.

Chair of selectors Terry Carter said “Our initial squad has changed slightly as other players come into contention whilst some others have left the squad through injuries and availability. We have again run our development squad this season and a number of guys have come into contention via this route”

He went on to say “Further players may be included at a later stage if injuries or form preclude selected players”.

Following the Tamar Cup game a number of training sessions have been programmed in for the build-up to the first game that takes place on Saturday 6 May.

Cornwall coach Graham Dawe said – “This game is crucial to allow us to observe players in the County shirt and how they perform under that additional pressure. We have away games against Surrey and Devon before we face Hertfordshire at home this season. There will certainly be pressure on everyone involved in this year’s squad." he went on to say “Places for the championship games are up for grabs and players who perform well in the Tamar Cup, training and for their clubs, are in mix for selection”

CRFU Chair Denis Preece said “We look forward to travelling to Tiverton RFC to face Devon for what are always hard fought games. He went on to add “We also welcome our vocal and knowledgeable supporters who always give our boys a lift and of course Trelawny’s Army who will be selling raffle tickets to win a signed Cornwall 2016 Squad shirt which will be drawn in June.”

DEVON RFU have named a large squad of 29 players for Monday night's Tamar Cup match with Cornwall at Tiverton RFC (kick-off 7.30pm).

The party includes some of last season’s County Championship squad, like Sam Thomas, Lewis Paterson, Isaac Dalton, Ollie Rice and Jack Fahy, plus new faces like Devon under-20 captain Mitch Pinkus and Brixham second-rowers Malcolm Onsando and Shek Sherriff.

Sidmouth’s former Esher and Rosslyn Park fly-half Tom Whelan is also included, as is ex-Albion, London Irish and Coventry hooker Davy McGregor.

Devon do have more players to add to their County Championship squad who are either unavailable or injured for Monday night’s match against Cornwall.

Devon’s coaching staff for the 2017 season will be Dan Parkes, Jon Hill and Lewis Paterson, with Gareth Jones as team manager.

Cornwall won last year's Tamar Cup with a mid-week victory at St Austell.
