Camborne School of Mines and Bottle Match to Disappear?

The name of one of the most famous mining institutions in the world, “Camborne School of Mines” may soon be a thing of the past. CSM was founded almost 130 years ago in 1888 and in 1902 the famous Bottle Match was born.

The annual gathering of two packs of miners, Camborne School of Mines and The Royal School of Mines, to play rugby is now the second oldest varsity match but could be at risk if the powers that be have their way.

When the university campus at Falmouth was created, there were no university sports teams and those looking to take part in competitive events were told to contact local teams in the area. Camborne School of Mines was and is an established rugby team in Cornwall, and it gratefully accepted the many students who wished to play. Since then, many other sports have taken on the CSM name including hockey, netball and football.

This year would bring about the 115th annual Bottle match between CSM and RSM. Bottle Match is the second oldest varsity match in the world. Since 1902 the only thing that prevented the game from being played was the Great War and since 2004 all CSM teams have been welcome to partake in this historic event.

This year, motions are being put in place to cancel Bottle Match and remove the CSM brand from the University teams. Bottle match is more than simply a sporting event, more than a day, it is a culmination of over 100 years of a legacy which unifies both players and supporters alike.

Bottle Match is much more than just a University sports competition it unites students and locals alike. It has become a huge part of Cornish history over the years holding great significance to all of Cornwall. The rugby match has been held in Cornwall 54 times being played by 3450 students all remembering the one match that truly mattered, not just to them, but for many Cornish rugby supporters.

For those who wish Max Stirling has set up a petition against the removal of CSM sport and Bottle Match through change.org which may be found here:

Bill Beaumont Senior Men’s County Championship Fixtures 2017/18

The format of the 2017/18 competition remains the same as it was in 2016/17 with the six southern counties of Division One (Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Kent, Hertfordshire, Surrey and Devon) being divided into two groups of three with each county playing the three counties in the other group. The effect of this is that the fixtures will be the reverse of last season. The fixtures are:

Saturday 5th May 2018 – Cornwall v Surrey

Saturday 12th May 2018 – Cornwall v Devon

Saturday 19th May 2018 – Hertfordshire v Cornwall

It is understood that the bottom placed county of the six in Division One, based on their aggregate points over the two seasons (2016/17 & 2017/18), will be relegated to Division Two.

The winner of Division One will play the winner of the Northern Division One (Lancashire, Yorkshire, East Midlands, Cheshire, Eastern Counties and Northumberland) in the Final at Twickenham on Sunday 27th May 2018.
